Bristol Baby!!!
Well, I sure do think the weekends with open dates for the Cup Series are LOOOONGGGG. I suppose there is the Busch race & the IRL season does open. SIGH! I guess it will be a good weekend to get the yard ready for gardening
I have not heard a lot of chatter about the end of the race at Atlanta being ruined by Cousin Carl's bonehead move. I was listening to the PRN broadcast when the incident between Edwards & BK happened. It SOUNDED like Juan Pablo was catching Kurt Busch. Did he have a legitimate chance of passing him in the last three laps if the race hadn't been yellow flagged? Judging by the lack of criticism on this aspect of the race I have my doubts. What is everyone's opinion about this? Did JPM have a real chance for his first victory on an oval track?
Having lost a lot of respect for Carl Edwards on Sunday afternoon, I now find myself losing a lot of respect for NASCAR today. Probation?? Are you kidding me?? Everyone from Mark Garrow on down expected at minimum a 25 point reduction and a $25K fine. I completely agree to the "boys have at it" policy, but there has to be a limit to what can be tolerated for paybacks, and Cousin Carl went way over the line on Sunday. I don't understand NASCAR's reluctance to make an example of Edwards in this situation. If a driver or even worse a spectator get's killed or severely injured NASCAR will have no choice but to rein everyone in, and we already have seen what this will result in (more boring & predictable racing). C'mon NASCAR, let the "boys have at it" but let's also make sure we don't have to go through another Dale Earnhardt Sr. moment.
I really lost a lot of respect for Carl Edwards today. He is certainly one of NASCAR's most marketable personalities, he seems like he is really a decent guy, but I don't understand why he felt like he had to give BK payback at that particular place & time. Not only did he put BK in peril as well as hundreds of spectators, he probably changed the outcome of the race. It appeared that Juan Pablo had a real chance to catch Kurt Busch with three laps remaining. I really would have loved to see if JPM could have got his first victory on an oval. On a related note, it certainly seems like the wing plays a big part in getting these COTs airborne when they spin around at over 180 MPH. I think it is just as well they they are planning to ditch them. I do have one question about the wing: I thought they were supposed to detach from the body when the car spun around as did BK. Was there a change to this or am I imagining it?
